Thefirst question is whether a ROM with a newer Android version exists for your device. As mentioned, XDA is the first place to look.) The next question is why you need a newer Android version. I have an old device stuck on 4.4.2. I was able to root it. I don't believe there is a replacement ROM with a newer Android version, but I don't care.
The4.2.2 update for Samsung's tablets has been kind of sporadic. Before now we've seen the Galaxy Note 8.0 LTE version get it in the UK, with the 3G version of the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 updated in France.
