I ended up taking the grill out by cutting the plastic lugs under the bonnet and undoing the bolts that hold the bonnet latch. I didn't repair or refit any lock, just did exactly what you are suggesting - I left the hole behind the swivel badge and poke a long blade through into the plastic recess to turn it and open up the bonnet. I had to shove a block of wood under the hood to hold the hood up tighter. Then I pulled the lever and the hood popped open. The cable is loose. When I manually operate the latch with the hood open, it works fine. When hood is closed, it wont pop open. So, now trying to figure out how to tighten the cable or replace it.
